CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro was philosophical when asked before Monday night's game what he thought of Joakim Noah's Cleveland insults.

"Joe's a free spirit," he said. "He's going to speak his mind, and when you do, you've got to back it up. And you back it up by going out there and playing well."

Tough to say whether bashing the city was Noah's way of jacking himself up for Game 2. But his off-court jabs aside, Noah backed up his mouth with a career night that nearly had the Cavs limping back to Chicago with the series tied.

The lead changed hands 17 times. But despite Noah's effort, the Cavs won, 112-102, to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, heading to Chicago for Game 3 Thursday.

Showered with boos from the sold-out Q all night, the Bulls' 6-11 center led Chicago with 25 points and 13 rebounds -- seven on the offensive side. By comparison, the Cavs had five offensive rebounds as a team.

"The big thing is they got extra possessions," said Cavs coach Mike Brown, analyzing why the Cavs shot 56 percent from the floor but barely outlasted Chicago. "We have to clean that up next game."

With Noah and Chicago's other big men commanding the offensive boards, the Bulls took 22 more shots than the Cavs.

Noah was 10 of 18 from the floor and five of five from the foul line. His previous career high was 21. His previous playoff best was 13. Despite the numbers, Noah was obviously drained and disappointed.

"Just because our front court statistically did better, we didn't win the game," he said, "so we can't be too happy about it."

In Game 1, he was banged around and frustrated all night as the Cavs alternated Shaquille O'Neal, Anderson Varejao and Zydrunas Ilgauskas on him.

On Monday, the Cavs went into halftime leading 52-50, but by then, Chicago, which came into the game promising to be more aggressive, had already made a statement. And no one spoke louder, without saying a word this time, than Noah.

Instead of getting pushed around under the boards, the Bulls commanded the paint, especially on offense. They scored 56 points inside to the Cavs' 38, and converted 21 second-chance points to the Cavs 7.

Noah, all energy and wingspan, gave the Cavs fits.

"He just continues to improve," Del Negro said. "He's going to play hard all the time. He was very, very effective tonight -- from the tip. He did an excellent job in all phases for us. He was just fantastic."

Blue Monday: Heading into Game 2, the Bulls were 3-7 in Monday games this season.

Good company: Derrick Rose , who poured in 28 points in Game 1 and added 23 on Monday, averaged at least 20 points, six assists and 3.5 rebounds per game during the regular season. Only three other players pulled that off: LeBron James , Miami's Dwyane Wade and New Orleans' Chris Paul .

Resiliency: Chicago has proven its ability to overcome the odds. After the Bulls lost 10 straight late this season, they went on a 10-4 tear, winning the last three to squeeze into the playoffs.

Big spread: As the series unfolds, close games aren't in the Cavs' favor. They were 32-5 in games decided by at least 10 points this season, while the Bulls were 15-21. The Cavs were 2-2 in overtime games, while the Bulls won five of seven. In games decided by three or less, the Cavs were 7-8, while the Bulls were 7-5. So if Chicago is still hanging around at the end...
